Design Idea

The dataset that I used is a set of my niece’s feeding time. In this semester, as we having an online semester, I was able to live with my sister and her family in LA, California. She got her daughter - Beverly Rae during the summer. Rae was born two months earlier than her due date. As a premature baby, Rae needs us to put more attention on her. Therefore, the daily feeding time has always been recorded in order to ensure she is growing healthily. When knowing that this assignment is all about data, I decided to visualized Rae’s feeding time. This is not only just for finishing homework, but also to record part of Rae’s growth as her aunt.

Design Process

bottle

Firstly, I used Illustrator to create a milk bottle to present the time. When putting the dataset into the JSON file, I started to think about the aesthetic way to show those data in sequence. I thought and thought, finally decided to just keep it simple. So I made up my mind to just show the data on a daily based and show seven of them. I tried to select colors that are light and neutral. Also thought about the colors that represented the gender. Usually, traditional thought was blue represent boy and pink represents pink, I selected them all since I want to create a gender-equal environment for Rae. (Also, before diagnosis, my sister always thought she has carried a boy. Lots of clothes prepared for Rae are colored in blue). To make the visual looks more fun, I also added a baby toy gif on the top right. I also think to add some baby lullabies, but turns out they all make people feel sleepy!

Reflection

I had lots of fun when making this assignment. Thought a lot about all the efforts parents put into when growing a baby. It is also interesting to visualize those efforts as well. By visualizing the data, I have a deeper understanding of a parent’s dedication and hard-working when raising a baby. Thus, maybe in the future, I will keep visualizing the data related to the baby, maybe just for tracing Rae’s growth, or just to rethink how much effort that my parents put into me.
